Thanks to the data gathered by the Wine E-commerce Observatory throughout 2021, we now have insight into Italians’ preferred wine products, both in terms of domestic sales and exports, such as shipping wine abroad. Among these are Lugana for whites, Primitivo di Manduria for reds, Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore for sparkling wines, and Salento IGT for rosés.
Lugana, a DOC wine from the Brescia and Verona areas, is favored by consumers over 50, particularly in Lombardy, where it constitutes 36% of total sales. Primitivo, a DOC wine from Taranto, enjoys popularity among those under 40 in Lazio, representing 15% of overall purchases. Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco DOCG, exclusive to the hills of Treviso province, sees rising demand from the 18 to 34 age group. Meanwhile, Salento IGT, sourced from Brindisi, Lecce, and Taranto, dominates the rosé market, with 25% of sales in Lombardy and Lazio.
In the first half of 2022, there was also notable interest in shipping wine abroad and purchasing unique finds. Many wine products and lesser-known labels have caught the attention of the average consumer, who is venturing to discover new flavors and scents not typically found among the classic offerings.
Among these, Amarone della Valpolicella, Barolo, and Champagne still rank in the top five most purchased wines, especially in the over-40 age group. Once again, Lombardy confirms itself as the top purchasing region, followed by Lazio and Emilia Romagna.
